Abstract:

I will discuss two topics in this talk. I discuss the results of a recent paper on unstable layers based on analysis of US High Vertical-Resolution Radiosonde Data (HVRRD). In that paper, we showed that the vertical scales of unstable layers in the lower stratosphere are much less than those in the troposphere, as might be expected. We also show that the local times of occurrence of unstable layers in the stratosphere appears to be much different over the western and eastern continental US. We also show the existence of a “notch” in unstable layers in the deep tropics, occurring at an altitude of about 12 km. The second topic deals with the occurrence of turbulence maxima in the vicinity of the tropopause, and how this varies with season and latitude. We interpret this in terms of gravity wave breaking into turbulence as the stability sharply increases from the upper troposphere to the lower stratosphere. Finally, I mention an international workshop on “Research Using High-Vertical Resolution Radiosonde Data,” which is motivated by the very large increase in the globally available HVRRD.
