Abstract:
The near-surface humidity plays a crucial role in various atmospheric processes, particularly those associated with cloud development and rainfall. The humidity within a few tens of meters above the surface is strongly influenced by surface characteristics, with land cover being a major factor determining the spatial variation of surface humidity. However, accurately measuring near-surface humidity in high resolution has been challenging using conventional tools.
In this study, we propose a new approach for high-resolution near-surface humidity measurement based on cellular network data. This approach enables us to examine the land-cover effect on low-level atmospheric humidity at a fine scale, providing valuable insights into previously unexplored aspects. Additionally, the abundant observations from the cellular network can significantly enhance data assimilation in weather forecast models, thereby improving the accuracy of weather forecasts.
By integrating opportunistic humidity measurements from the cellular network, our multidisciplinary study has the potential to make significant contributions to operational weather forecasting, particularly in predicting extreme weather events such as heavy rain and floods. Moreover, it can enhance our understanding of anthropogenic effects on the environment, which is crucial for effective planning and preparedness.
