סמינר בחוג לגיאופיזיקה: Recent developments in the study of monsoon depressions: genesis, growth, propagation, and trend

Abstract:

At least half of the total seasonal precipitation in most continental monsoon regions is estimated to be produced by synoptic scale low-pressure disturbances embedded within the larger-scale monsoon circulation. The more intense occurrences of these low-pressure systems are called monsoon depressions. These storms are commonly associated with extreme rain rates, and frequently transit land surfaces without significant loss of intensity. Despite the importance of monsoon disturbances, they have been studied relatively little, and some aspects of their dynamics remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will explore recent observational and theoretical developments in the study of monsoon depressions focusing on conditions that foster formation, possible intensification mechanisms, propagation dynamics, and trends.
