Abstract:
The Giant planets in the solar system carry important information on its formation and evolution. Here we discuss conventional approches and first steps toward advanced methods to model the internal structure of the solar system giant planets, based on current observational constraints and our knowledge of the
material properties. In particular, we show how dropping the standard assumption of largely adiabatic and homogeneous planet envelopes can help to explain the observed properties, such as Jupiter's He-Ne depleted atmosphere, Uranus' low luminosity, and Saturn's axisymmetric magnetic field.
