Abstract:

Observations of propagating Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) waves for more than a solar cycle have provided ample data on the corona. In particular, since the launch of Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) unprecedented details on EUV waves in active regions were obtained.  Upflows of heated plasma and cooling downflows were detected as well in coronal loops by SDO Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and spectroscopic imaging was obtained by Hinode satellite. The waves supply energy to the corona that can heat it and accelerate the solar wind. Observing the waves can also be used to determine the magnetic structure of the corona - coronal seismology. Recent observations confirm that sufficient energy flux is available in the EUV waves for heating the corona.  However, detailed numerical modeling is required to provide accurate energy and mass flux estimates and their dissipation rates in various coronal structures. I will present recent observations and numerical modeling results of waves and flows in active regions using realistic magnetic structures and discuss applications for coronal seismology.  I will also describe the impact of recent observations on our understanding of energy transport by waves and flows in coronal active regions.
