PROGRAM

14:30 - 14:45  Refreshments

14:45 - 15:45  Electroweak reactions with nuclei, Sonia Bacca, Johannes-Gutenberg University

Abstract:

Electroweak reactions with nuclei are key observable to study: not only are they relevant to nuclear physics, but they also allow to connect to other field of physics, such as particle physics. Beyond the lightest nuclear systems, a first principle computation of electroweak reactions in terms of protons and neutrons interacting with external fields is complicated by the fact that the probe can break the nucleus into many clusters, leading to several simultaneously open reaction channels. A way to circumvent this problem is to use integral transforms. Recently, we provided a coupled-cluster theory formulation of the Lorentz integral transform, obtaining a many-body method that allows to compute electroweak reactions and related observable in the medium-mass nuclei.

15:45 - 16:15  Coffee Break

16:15 - 17:15  Quark-gluon plasma and its signatures in heavy-ion collisions with the ATLAS experiment, Petr Balek, Weizmann Institute of Science

Abstract:

Quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a strongly interacting matter which is created in the collisions of heavy ions. Lead-lead collisions analyzed by the ATLAS collaboration provide insight into the properties of the QGP. Collective behavior of the particle production typically referred to as "flow" is observed, and it is closely related to the properties of the medium in the QGP phase. Surprisingly, similar collective effects have been observed in proton-lead and in proton-proton collisions in which transition to the QGP phase is not anticipated. This captured the attention of the scientific community that resulted in a wealth of new measurements.

Recent results of the ATLAS collaboration examine these phenomena with unprecedented precision, including not only lead-lead, proton-lead, and proton-proton collisions but also photon-lead collisions will be discussed in my talk.
