Abstract:
We theoretically analyze the dynamics of a 1D array of classical harmonic oscillators, say pendula, that have a mild gradient in their self-frequency and with each neighboring pair of pendula interacting linearly via a weak and alternating coupling strength. We show that this classical system maps to the quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of electrons on a lattice with an electric field. As a result, an initial wave-packet of the pendula translations in the bulk of the lattice evolves according the Schrodinger equation and displays within its evolution nontrivial quantum-like phenomena; These includes Bloch oscillations, a Landau-Zener like transition between the bands, and coupling between the isospin and the spatial degrees of freedom. Most importantly, we show how to use the Bloch oscillations in the adiabatic evolution regime to directly measure the non-trivial topological phase winding of the band.
